Summary
Throughout the 20th century, charismatic world leaders unsed the power of speech to communicate difficult truths, galvanize citizens to fight for independence, and to unite nations to defeat foreign enemies. In the days before radio and television, President Woodrow Wilson was considered one of the greatest orators of his generation. Wilson was wildly popular with the American electorate for his pledge to keep the United States out of the Great War, but by 1917, the Zimmerman note and unrestricted U-boat attacks pressured him to ask Congress for a declaration of war. Students will learn that America's entry broke the deadlock in Europe and led to Wilson's "Fourteen Points" speech, which he believed would drastically reduced the chance of future conflicts
